Congressman Gene Taylor speaks to more than 100 veterans at Gulfport's WWII memorial, telling two emotional stories of two veterans from Mississippi. Taylor later told a group of young students that the greatest tribute they could pay our nation's veterans would be to say "I want to be just like you," and then he urged the young people in the audience to lead lives filled with duty, honor and respect. Taylor thanked the veterans for what they've done to help make America the greatest nation in the world.

Congressman Taylor hosts town hall meeting in Poplarville
November 16, 2009
By Steve Philips - WLOX-TV 13, November 13, 2009

POPLARVILLE, MS (WLOX) - It was standing room only at Congressman Gene Taylor's town hall meeting in Poplarville on Friday. The fourth district Democrat discussed everything from health care reform to partisan politics.

“Thank you all very, very much for coming out,” said Congressman Taylor, as he opened the informal session at 10am Friday.

Pearl River Community College hosted the town hall meeting. Congressman Taylor fielded questions from the large crowd for 90 minutes.

A question about the insurance industry being exempt from anti trust laws prompted a Katrina observation.

“Since it was legal for the insurance companies to talk to each other, I am personally convinced that State Farm, Allstate, Nationwide, did collaborate and basically say, 'Hey, if you don't pay claims, then the pressure won't be on me to pay claims and that guy won't have to pay claims either,'” said Congressman Taylor.

GULFPORT — When U.S. Rep. Gene Taylor spoke at the Veterans Day ceremony Wednesday morning, he didn’t just thank veterans for their service.

He directed most of his comments to band students from D’Iberville High who provided music, telling them that many veterans were fighting in wars when they were the students’ ages.

“They used to look just like you,” he said, pointing to the veterans gathered in front of the memorial.

“When they looked like you, they were flying helicopters, jumping out of parachutes and fighting in wars.”

Obama should listen to the Blue Dog Democrats
November 16, 2009
Alabama Press-Register, November 13, 2009

AS PRESIDENT Obama and key Democrats in the U.S. Senate prepare their final push for health care reform, they need to listen to the objections of moderates in their own party, including the five Democratic members of the Alabama and Mississippi House delegations who voted against the health care bill approved by the House.

Rep. Gene Taylor, D-Bay St. Louis, voted against the bill. He was joined by 38 other Democrats, including a colleague in the Mississippi delegation, Rep. Travis Childers. All three Democrats in the Alabama House delegation — Bobby Bright, Artur Davis and Parker Griffith — voted "no."

Supervisor John McKay said he and supervisors Mike Mangum and Melton Harris returned from Washington with commitments from the office of Sen. Thad Cochran, and from Sen. Roger Wicker and Rep. Gene Taylor personally.

The county has $6 million in the bank from previous congressional allotments and $2.8 million in the national funding pipeline for the project, he said.

“Taylor was very enthusiastic,” McKay said. “He said it’s a project that’s got to happen.”

November 2, 2009 (Washington, DC) – Although Congressman Taylor does not support the Affordable Healthcare for America Act,  he strongly supports Congressman Bart Stupak’s effort to include the Hyde Amendment in the healthcare bill.  The Hyde Amendment prohibits federal funds to be used to pay for abortions and to pay for health insurance policies that include abortion coverage.

“I fully support Congressman Stupak’s amendment to include the Hyde language in the final version of the Affordable Healthcare for America Act.”

Representative’s letter to FDA protests possible changes

AMANDA McCOY/SUN HERALD Oysters caught Thursday at the Pass Marianne Reef south of Pass Christian Harbor.
U.S. Rep. Gene Taylor has written a letter to the Food and Drug Administration to oppose their plans to require raw oysters to undergo a post-catch process to rid them of a very rare, but potentially deadly bacteria.

The FDA may require one of four treatments for Gulf oysters caught during the warm summer months: quick frozen, high-pressure treated, mild heat or low-dose gamma radiation to help lower deaths from the Vibrio vulnificus bacteria. The Mississippi Department of Marine Resources says the bacteria occurs more commonly between April and October when coastal waters are warmest, though they say they have heard of few cases here.

The regulations could take effect in 2011, but the seafood industry may be gearing up to oppose them.

Guard equipment to return from Iraq, Congress told
October 28, 2009
By Army Staff Sgt. Jim Greenhill - Defense Talk, October 28, 2009

ARLINGTON, Va: National Guard equipment will be returned from Iraq to the United States and Guard units can fill shortages with equipment currently in use in Iraq, Defense officials told Congress members Oct. 21.

"Reserve-component equipment will not be used as a source for Iraqi security forces requirements," Undersecretary of Defense for Policy Michele Flournoy told a House Armed Services Committee hearing on redeployment. "In fact, reserve units serving inIraq are being offered the opportunity to take theater-provided equipment back to their home station to fill any authorized shortages."

Rep. Gene Taylor, who represents Mississippi, said that one of his state's National Guard units that had returned from Iraq had only 60 percent of its equipment to use when Hurricane Katrina hit. He asked if equipment currently in Iraq will be made available to state and local agencies.

Health Care Reform

House of Representatives Health Care Bill (HR 3962)

CBO: Preliminary analysis of H.R. 3962, the Affordable Health Care for America Act

Gene's position

I am opposed to the current health care reform bills being debated in Congress.

However, I am a co-sponsor of two bills in Congress that will
help bring down health care costs.

  • Allowing the government to use its purchasing power to lower the cost of prescription drugs. (HR 684)
  • Forcing greater competition from insurance companies by eliminating their exemption from the nation's anti-trust laws. (HR 1583)

In addition, I also support a greater use of generic drugs unless a doctor advises otherwise.
