On October 28, 2009, Rep. Gene Taylor (D-Miss.) wrote FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg, M.D. in response to the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) announcement last week about the changes in regulations regarding Gulf Coast oyster harvesting. The unilaterally imposed changes would prevent raw oysters from being served in the United States. The Gulf Coast Oyster industry provides two-thirds of the nation's oysters and is a $500 million industry. The Oyster industry is already one of the most regulated food industries in the United States. On average, the Vibrio vulnificus infection rate from consumption of raw Gulf Coast oysters is .00005%.

For more information, read Congressman Taylor's letter to Commissioner Hamburg.
